Invisible Children - Saturday, May 12, 2007

Filed under: Events — Frozen River @ 9:24 am

Greetings,
My name is Netta Bell, and I am a junior at the Winona ALC. With some
of my fellow students, I’m helping to organize a film event at the
Winona Art Center, 5th St and Franklin, on Saturday, May 12, 2007.
The WALC Invisible Children Project is presenting a special free
screening of the film “Invisible Children”, which received the
People’s Choice Award at last winter’s Frozen River Film Festival in
Winona. The film will be shown at 2:30 PM and 6:00 PM, with a
followup discussion afterward, and all members of the public are
welcome.

“Invisible Children” was filmed by three young men in their 20’s who
went to Africa looking for a subject of a documentary. Their
award-winning film focuses on the 17-year civil war in Uganda and the
hardships encountered by the children there. These children have been
forced to migrate from their homes to refugee camps or have been
kidnapped and brainwashed into becoming ruthless soldiers.

When we saw this movie at school, we thought that a good first step
in helping would be to let more people in the community see the
movie. By showing “Invisible Children”, we hope to raise awareness of
the facts of these children’s lives and inspire action toward a
better future for all of them. After the showing, for those motivated
to help, we will discuss some specific ideas about constructive
projects that our community could support. Please join us, as we try
to confront the sad challenges these kids face with hope and
creativity.

Richard Branson and Al Gore launched the climate initiative

Millions of pounds are on offer for the person who comes up with the best way of removing significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson launched the competition today in London alongside former US vice-president Al Gore.

A panel of judges will oversee the prize, including James Lovelock and Nasa scientist James Hansen.

Sir Richard said humankind must realise the scale of the crisis it faced.

“The Earth cannot wait 60 years,” he said at the news conference. “I want a future for my children and my children’s children. The clock is ticking.”

He said if the planet was to survive, it was vital to find a way of getting rid of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

He said he believed offering the $25m (£12.5m) Earth Challenge Prize was the best way of finding a solution.

Frozen River Film Festival

Frozen River Film Festival Finds a Home - and an Audience - at WSU

When a friend told Maggy Jacqmin and Will Kitchen about the MountainFilm Festival held in Telluride, Colo., they thought it would be a great idea to bring the touring festival to Winona.

“MountainFilm features films focused on the environment, adventure sports and world culture,” said Jacqmin, artistic director for the Theatre du Mississippi, a Winona arts organization.

“Our friend was so excited when he described it, we felt like it was something we wanted to do. We just needed a place to hold it,” continued Jacqmin.

Kitchen and Jacqmin had recently walked through Winona State’s new Science Laboratory Building and thought it might be the perfect location to host a weekend’s worth of independent films, lectures and discussion groups, musical performances, exhibits and demonstrations.

So the pair pitched the idea to Dr. Judith Ramaley, who, according to Jacqmin, “was in her first week on the job. I don’t think she hesitated and said ‘Let’s find a way to do this.’”

The Post-Bulletin

WINONA — The Frozen River Film Festival is rolling into Winona State University for its second year, bringing a collection of films that likely wouldn’t be screened in the area otherwise.

The festival will feature around 40 films Jan. 24-28, the majority of them short features from the Mountainfilm in Telluride Festival in Colorado. The films, focused on extreme sports, environmental issues and world cultures, are just part of the festival, however, as speakers, music, community events and workshops are also planned.
