A local team from the Frozen River Film Festival will travel to Telluride, Colo. Memorial Day weekend to select films for the upcoming 2014 festival in Winona.
FRFF’s quest is to select films that will be shown at the annual Frozen River festival in 2014. The two festivals partner with each other, allowing Frozen River to choose some of the best independent documentaries from around the world. This is the seventh year FRFF has sent its representatives to Mountainfilm. One-third of Frff’s films come from MountainFilm.

While there, the team will be able to participate in all sorts of events, from ice cream socials to art exhibits. But most importantly, the team is looking to secure films for FRFF that are shown at Mountainfilm. By doing so, FRFF is able to secure the screening and media rights for films they may not be able to otherwise.

The team looks forward to connecting with filmmakers and the up-and-coming talent. “Given the caliber of Mountainfilm, it’s a great time to connect with many prominent activists.” says Festival Director, Crystal Hegge

Celebrate Release of Jailed Climate Activist & Peaceful Uprising Founder Tim DeChristopher
April 18 at 4PM Stark 103 and April 22 at 7:30PM Somsen Auditorium

On April 22, the official Earth Day screening will be followed by live streaming video of Tim DeChristopher’s first public address since his release from federal prison after a 21 month sentence. Movie-lovers and climate activists around the country have arranged local screenings and can participate live via Skype and Twitter in a Q&A with DeChristopher and filmmakers Beth and George Gage during the Salt Lake City premiere.

BIDDER 70 is a compelling feature-length documentary that chronicles how one young man’s act of civil disobedience blazed a new trail in the climate justice movement. At a time when the debate over climate change is finally gaining post-election “steam,” when hot-button topics such as fracking and the Keystone XL Pipeline have captured the country’s attention, BIDDER 70 is poised to showcase the face and voice of a movement that has been steadily gathering force, comprised of people who have grave concerns over our future as well as our present.

Somsen Auditorium, Winona State University
Speaker Sandra Steingraber presents her film Living Downstream
Following Sandra Steingraber’s Presentation will be a Q&A and book signing.

Like her hero, the pioneering environmental writer and activist Rachel Carson (author of Silent Spring), Sandra Steingraber is a cancer victim. Diagnosed at age 20, she successfully battled the disease for 30 years. During that time she’s used her knowledge and training as a biologist to bridge the gap between what scientists and the medical community regard as the causes of cancer. Steingraber grew up surrounded by toxic chemical discharge from industrial agriculture and is certain that her childhood environment and her health as an adult are intimately connected. She asks one of the essential questions of our age: How much proof is necessary to treat industrial contamination of air, soil and streams as human rights issues? This is a powerful and compelling film about a woman whose brilliance is surpassed only by her honesty and grit.

The hauntingly beautiful documentary film, Chasing Ice, is screening twice in Winona, MN outside of its national theatrical release. The Frozen River Film Festival is hosting two screenings. The first screening is Sunday, January 20 at Saint Mary’s University in Figliulo Hall at 5:00 p.m. and the second screening is Tuesday, January 22 at the Southeast Technical College Auditorium, Room 205 at 5:30 p.m. Each screening is $5 or show your Big Muddy Pass for admittance.

Chasing Ice is a film you can feel in your stomach. One that is haunting and beautiful in its ability to tell the story of ice. Photographer, James Balog embarks on the greatest mission of his career: risking his life for a multiple-year project using state-of-the-art cameras in the most harrowing weather conditions to capture of glacial melting. Balog hikes the ice caps in Alaska, Iceland, and Greenland placing cameras that capture the melt through time-lapse photography. The years of photography is compressed into seconds, where the ice comes alive as it retracts, crumbles and changes the face of our coldest climates.

When we saw “Living Downstream”, we knew it was right for the festival. Sandra Steingraber shares a story which revolves around her search for answers. Central themes – like the connection between chemicals and disease – offer a provocative perspective on life in the shadow of Big Agriculture, and, in her case, a thirty year survivor of cancer …. Steingraber’s tenacious scientific look at industrial pollution, considers the facts, and provides answers. This is just one of over 50 documentary films to be presented at the 8th annual Frozen River Film Fest – don’t just take our word for it, come out and see for yourself.
