What will I be doing?

Volunteer Positions

Thank you so much for taking the time to volunteer with us! We appreciate your time and efforts. The primary thing we look for in a volunteer is someone who can provide good customer service to our patrons and can help problem solve if the situation requires it. All of our venues will have venue managers, so many of the questions patrons have can be directed towards those individuals, but it will be your job to help guide them to the venue manager if you do not have the answer to their questions.

NEW THIS YEAR!  We are so thankful that you're joining us!  We've made a few changes, so please see the notes below!
This year, we are organizing volunteer categories differently. When you look at our website you will see opportunities to help for to: SLC Lobby Jobs, WSU Campus (Weekend), Winona Arts Center (Weekend), Various Locations (Weekday). While many of these jobs are similar to those we’ve had in the past, when signing up, you aren’t specifically selecting what job you will be doing or what location you will be at if you select WSU Campus (Weekend).
This is mainly because when people don’t show up, or too few people sign up, we have to rearrange volunteers, and people are disappointed in their placements or do not wish to be moved around.

SLC Lobby Jobs

  • Ticket Sales: Sell passes and tickets to patrons using an ipad. Being familiar with passes and tickets and the admittance each of these includes.  Should be comfortable with handling money and running credit cards.  Will be trained in on iPad before shift begins.

  • Merchandise: Sell merchandise to patrons.  Should be comfortable with handling money and running credit cards. Familiarity with the Square point of sales system is helpful but not required.  Kara will be available to answer any questions you have.

  • Coffee Concessions: Sell coffee to patrons.  Should be comfortable with handling money.  Ensure patrons are aware that food and beverages should be consumed in the Atrium and are not to enter film venues.

  • Film Voting and Survey Promotion: Assist patrons in voting for their favorite film (People’s Choice Award) through the use of ipads and paper ballots.  Walking around the Science Learning Center (SLC) Atrium in between films and promoting patrons to fill out the FRFF survey.

WSU Campus (Weekend), Winona Arts Center (Weekend), Various Locations (Weekday): Please watch this training 4-and-a-half minute video: https://youtu.be/sbwkswH31Hc

Changes to passes:

- If you volunteer for less than 5 hours, you will receive tickets to view your chosen screenings.
- If you volunteer for 5 or more hours, you will receive an All Access Pass!

This year, we do not have a volunteer room in SLC. So, if you are volunteering on campus over the weekend, please report to the SLC Atrium near the volunteer center.

We will be in contact with how and when you can pick up your tickets/passes.

What do I need to know about my volunteer shift?

Where do I go for my volunteer shift?

For volunteer shifts not on the WSU Campus, please go directly to the film/event location (the location can be found in the description if you are during the week). You will be greeted and trained in at that specific location.  *Please arrive 15 minutes before the beginning of your shift.

For volunteer shifts on the WSU campus during the weekend of the festival (February 10 and 11), please go to the Science Laboratory Center Atrium for check-in (400 Winona St, Winona, MN 55987). The volunteer coordinator, Kara Eggers, will check you in and direct you to your WSU shift location.  *Please arrive 15 minutes before the beginning of your shift.

What should I wear?

Dress comfortably and warmly!  Casual attire is fine.  Layers are often a good idea, as it can get chilly in many of the screening venues.  Upon arriving at your shift, you’ll receive a FRFF vest to wear over your attire for the duration of your shift.

Do I get a ticket or a pass?

THANK YOU for your help in bringing the art of documentary film back to our community again this year!  You will receive 1 ticket to a screening per hour worked or a full pass once you have completed 5 or more hours of volunteering.
